Great News for MOT Testers!     (07/10/2009)
by Ian Gott

VOSA have released Special Notice 8-2009 which outlines the new Requirements for Authorisation for Authorised Examiners (AEs) and Vehicle Testing Stations (VTSs).

Why is this good news?  Well, part of the new requirements involve changes to the minimum dimensions of the test bay which should mean that new applicants can fit a bay into a smaller area, and those existing testing stations trading on so-called Grandfather Rights may at last be able to upgrade their facility.  Some dimensions have increased slightly but there are some significant reductions which could greatly reduce the length of an inline bay.

For example, it is now acceptable to install a brake tester roller bed only 1.5 metres inside the door on a Class IV bay and the gap between the roller bed and recessed lift has been reduced.  This means that older testing stations with bays of similar dimensions may be able to upgrade to the latest One Person Testing Lane (OPTL) or Automated Test Lane (ATL) technology without having to extend the bay.
